The Church Mice Spread Their Wings by Graham Oakley is a delightfully humorous children's picture book featuring the mischievous church mice and their long-suffering feline companion, Sampson.
Life at the church has become rather crowded, and the mice are beginning to get on one another's nerves. When the opportunity arises for an outing, Sampson the church cat reluctantly finds himself responsible for taking a group of adventurous mice on a trip into the countryside.
But Sampson has a few tricks up his sleeve! Rather than providing the exciting expedition the mice expect, he convinces them that ordinary English surroundings are far more exotic than they really are, passing off Wortlethorpe Park as the jungles of India and a building site as the Sahara Desert.
As the mice enthusiastically explore their supposedly far-flung destinations, their outing becomes increasingly chaotic, culminating in a rather alarming encounter with a barn owl on the journey home.
Filled with witty dialogue, clever visual humour and wonderfully detailed illustrations, this story showcases Graham Oakley's distinctive blend of animal adventures, gentle satire and wonderfully absurd situations. His intricate artwork is packed with amusing details, making the book enjoyable for children and adults alike.
Originally published in 1975, The Church Mice Spread Their Wings is the fourth instalment in the much-loved Church Mice series.
A fantastic vintage children's picture book for lovers of classic British children's literature, humorous animal stories and beautifully illustrated books, as well as collectors of Graham Oakley's Church Mice adventures.
