Terry Southerwood was boring in Launceston, Tasmania, in 1938.

Educated by Presentation Sisters and Christian Brothers, he was ordained a catholic priest from Corpus Christ College, Victoria, in 1963.

An honours graduate from the University of Tasmania he has worked in seven parishes and for 17 years edited both weekly and monthly newspapers.

A life member of the ecumenical Australasian Religious Press Association, he has won awards for best news stories and editorials of that body and of the Catholic Press Association of Australia and New Zealand.

For 30 years Fr Southerwood served as a member of the executive of the Tasmanian Council of Churches and was State President for two years. He was chosen by the bishops of Australia to represent the Catholic Church at the inaugural and second for a of the National Council of Churches in Australia and was appointed to the national Christian World Service Commission. As an accredited working journalist he has taken part in four international Assemblies of the World Council of Churches. He has helped to found an ecumenical Mission to Seafarers.

He has published 22 books on historical and biblical topics and contributed more than 100 major articles to professional journals. One volume, on deceased Australian clergy has been updated and reprinted five times. He has engaged in presenting television and radio programmes, both at local and national level.

For the past nine years Fr Southerwood has been Dean of Northern Tasmania. Currently he is Parish Priest / Moderator of Launceston. For more than twenty years he was Diocesan Historian and Defender of the Bond in the Tasmanian Catholic Marriage tribunal. He has lectured extensively on history and faith issues. He is a member of two school boards, the Tasmanian Council of Priests and College of Diocesan Consultors.
