The catamaran disaster, even more than the break-up of his marriage, had left Tom Howard a broken man. He wandered around like a zombie, waiting for the outcome of the Coroner's hearing that would knock the final nails in the coffin of his self respect.

Avril was new Managing Director of Relton Marine Engineering and her responsibilities meant that she had little time to offer support to Tom. She knew that he needed her more than ever, but she was simply unavailable.
