Critical Choices is an oral history which examines the different career and family paths some females have pursued. Twelve women, all mothers, all in their thirties, share their stories in a gentle and intimate manner.

Critical Choices focuses on females who entered careers requiring tertiary qualifications. It explores their decisions to have children and the repercussions upon careers. Some of the interviewees have remained in full-time paid employment, others have decided either to resign or return to part-time paid work.

Each woman's account includes details of her childhood and education. This makes Critical Choices unique. The reader is given the information to gain a picture of each interviewee's past experiences and origins and so is able to understand better why the choices have been made and what has helped the women become who they are. Furthermore, because this background material is included, we catch a glimpse of how life was for women in the 1950s and 60s and can compare these women's lives with those of their mothers.

Critical Choices was edited by Anne Wilson and Elizabeth Gayton. Both have a teaching background, three children, chaotic households, busy lifestyles and a passion for literature.
