Group Captain Leonard Cherhire V.C., D.S.O., D.F.C., led the famous 617Squadron on some forty raids. His ice-cold brain and nerve enabled him to perfect the most hair-raising bombing technique ever conceived: flying bomb dumps, rocket sites, powder works, aero-factories, railway tunnels, and E-boat pens were among the special targets allotted to him and his crews. He flew so low over enemy territory that he had the unique experience of guns firing down upon him; and his courage was recognised and summed up in the V.C. citation which said of him: He has a reputation second to nonw in Bomber Command.
Russell Braddon takes the Cheshire story from its earliest days, through the war years, and up to his post-war efforts towards the relief of sufffering.
